The Temper Trap

The Temper Trap are one of those bands gifted with an incredible voice. When lead singer, Doug, hits full stride with his singing, the result is a display of immense power. It's crisp, focused and seems to project endlessly. But of course vocals are just one part of a very complicated equation. You need to write music that supports and strengthens them.

About 18 months ago, The Temper Trap burst onto the scene with their debut EP. The songs were solid and catchy, but it was the vocals that were left to hold them up. They played a run of shows and then disappeared as quickly as they arrived. Well now they've returned with a host of new material and this time it looks like they may have got the balance right. As if to make a statement, the old songs have been completely dropped.

I got the chance to see them live last Thursday and was thoroughly impressed. Clearly, this is where The Temper Trap strive. Despite more than 90% of the songs being unfamiliar, they managed to keep me engaged and entertained from start to finish. I loved how it wasn't just left to Doug to capture your attention. The whole band was moving around, singing in choruses and adding to the energy of the show. Jonny on bass is always a favourite. You won't find a more animated bass player anywhere.

The highlight of the show was easily their new single 'Sweet Disposition'. From the few times I had heard it on radio and myspace, I knew it was going to be good live, but on the night it surpassed all expectations. The nature of the song, combined with some well timed lighting led to a build up in energy so intense that when the chorus finally hit, the whole place exploded. I can vividly remember turning to a friend, both of us grinning uncontrollably, lost in the sheer awesomeness of the moment. The crowd applauded for a good minute afterwards and the band had to wait for everyone to stop and get their breath back. Brilliant.

Mp3: Sweet Disposition

They must have done something wrong last time they were around because every second person I've spoken to lately seems to be a hater. To those people, I say forget your issues and go see them with an open mind. Because in terms of music and performance (ie the things that matter), The Temper Trap have the goods.

haters? really? I saw them at the 2nd Melb show and it was pretty amazing. I'm not sure why you'd want to hate on a band that is virtually unknown but really really good with huge international potential.

man.. these guys have about the best live show going around.
tell the haters to stick it.

was not a fan of their EP though. thought it was boring. the fact that they dont even play those songs anymore speaks volumes for what they are doing now.

anonymous is on the money too. 2009 is going to be a HUGE year for these guys. both here and in the UK. HUGE.

I actually didn't mind some of the songs on the EP, but after hearing the new stuff, I'm really not too disappointed to see the back of it. They indeed have big times ahead.

yeah, when they first started playing gigs they were fairly unpolished, and did not by far have this sort of sound. live anyway.
I fricken love this song and its my new all time fav. Great to see an Aussie band shock the shite out of me as to their awesomeness.

Thank god they are signed to liberation records so they can be pushed on to the public through corporate marketing. They sound terrible their songs lack in all area's.Anyone one can just rip off other bands music and call it their own.Stop being shoe gazers and WAKE UP.

This band is terrible, i cant believe people are so blind when listening to music its lacks originality. As i have heard many people say its just hype being pushed by record companies.

  19. to the next person who goes to leave a comment saying how much they hate this band, i would be interested to get some insight into your motives.

while that gig i saw was great, im not really into this band, so you could say i agree with you. but when i dislike a band, i usually just ignore them, or pay them out amongst friends. it seems strange to me that people are coming out of their way to tear into temper trap.

did you actually search for them so that you could find places to heap abuse? or were you browsing this blog and stumbled upon this post and had to let your views be known?

i am genuinely curious to know. seems to me like some people out there are way too angry for their own good. hottest 100 is over. nirvana won! go be angry at the lack of things to be angry about
