The White Stripes - Icky Thump

Mp3s are central to my reviews. I like to give people an idea of what I'm talking about. Besides, it makes for exellent cop outs like 'have a listen for yourself', making my job easier. So if a band wants me to get rid of their mp3s, and there's nothing wrong with that, then I also get rid of the review (all be it a bit a late).

WITHOUT PREJUDICE

Dear Open Your Eyes Bloggers,

On behalf of XL Recordings and Jack & Meg, we would kindly ask you NOT to post newly released WHITE STRIPES files / links on this blog. Regrettably, should you continue to do so DMCA notifications shall be forwarded to the site and take-down / closure action shall follow : naturally, however, we hope that this shall not prove to be necessary.

As you will be aware, traffic on this (just released) album is being monitored and removed ... .. and not just by Web Sheriff, but also by Warners and their attorneys so, if you have to indulge in this activity (which - again - Jack and Meg would rather you didn't), then do it off-line / do not 'broadcast' it via blogs or forums ; otherwise your details will be harvested and you may be hearing from Warners and / or the RIAA.

On behalf of the artist’s label, we do appreciate that - of course - you are fans of / are promoting THE WHITE STRIPES but, by the same token, you must also appreciate that, by posting a pirate copy of the album or tracks from the album around its release (or linking to pirate copies), you are potentially causing considerable inconvenience and we are sure that you would not want to be personally responsible (or liable) for all of the resulting damage and disruption.

Thank you for respecting the artist's and label's wishes and, if you want good quality, non-pirated preview tracks, you can stream tracks from the album off MTV's official site for a limited period, but please do not then put these tracks into unauthorised, digital distribution ... .. not only would this be failing to reciprocate the gesture of goodwill / trust shown by the artist and label in providing these streams to fans, but you'd also highly likely to land yourselves in trouble further down the line when other 'parties' take-over the role of copyright enforcement (with very different methods).

Whilst writing, we'd add that Jack and Meg are not at all against free music BUT, at the end of the day, it should be (and is) the artist's decision as to whether or not they effectively allow the unauthorised distribution of their album on-line upon its commercial release - as it's THEIR MUSIC !! For the avoidance of doubt, the recent Q101 broadcast was NOT authorised (so there are no double standards applying here).

Thanks, once again, for your co-operation and understanding.

As you will appreciate, this e-mail - containing, as it does, a position that is potentially prejudicial to our clients’ open / formal position - is written on a without prejudice basis and, as such, all of our clients’ accumulated, worldwide rights remain strictly reserved : please excuse this required formality.

With Thanks & Regards,

WEB SHERIFF

Lay off me alright!! I was always going to get rid of it, I'm just horribly inefficient. The policy is alive and well. The deed has now been done.
