Firekites

Firekites make some great music. Really great. Their recordings show a band creating soft, intricate sounds that sit nicely alongside the likes of Yo La Tengo. There's so many subtleties in it that every listen offers something new. It's the kind of music that really comes into its own when you pop on some headphones and immerse yourself in it. BUT. There is a problem. Apparently they fail to recreate this atmosphere live. I don't want to judge them before I've seen them personally, but I've heard this from at least three respectable sources. Everything from instruments that are all in the same frequency range, acoustic guitars that fail to cut through and a general inability to physically produce all the necessary sounds have been put forward as possible reasons for the let down. But who knows, maybe these people were just being pedantic or maybe these were one-off issues that have already been attended to. Whatever the case, you can catch them this Sunday (27th July) at The Annandale Hotel and see for yourself. It's an early gig (Cloud Control, the main support, are on at 7pm) and costs just $5. Nice!

Hey Peter I have discovered the perfect Swedish indie-pop album titled Spark Large by Marching Band. Check it out if you can be bothered.

I've seen them live twice and I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss their live performances. When they have the whole band together the music sounds just as good as on the album. However, while their instrumental numbers are fine, any song that they sing on tends to be a bit of a letdown as they don't project their voices enough. This isn't just a sound issue, they really seem as if they prefer to let the instruments take precedent to the point where one might think they would rather not sing at all.

Trust me, I never dismissed them. I got to see them and was actually quite impressed. its incredibly nice music and I would disagree about the singing. both have great voices which add to their sound. besides, isn't he in the instant? whats the point of starting an instrumental band if he's already in one? (ok thats kinda shallow, but still)

i did have a few issues with the show though. they need to mix up the pace a bit. the only real dynamics came at the very end and they were awesome.

towards the end of the set, a friend asked "have they played that 'cold outside' song yet?", to which I replied "yeah it was first. or wait, was it the song the before last?". then at that moment they launched into it. something mustn't be right when a song that I know and love fails to differentiate itself.

but still, great band.
